The 1950's are often times referred to as the "baby boom era". One desirable image during this time period was the "womanly" body - ample, a body of substance, capable of great nurturing, motherly and fertile. Another image of this time was the ideal as represented by Jane Russell or Marilyn Monroe - the voluptuous figure.[http://www.healingthehumanspirit.com/pages/body_img2.htm]

In the 1950's the ideal female body image was Marilyn Monroe , she was a size 14. Most likely, in today's standard of the ultra-thin body type, she would be considered chubby or overweight .

Slimness in Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were portrayed to cinema-goes as sophistication.
They became role models to most young women and slimness were associated with the upper class.

One of Fonda's greatest lessons has come from her battle with body image. "I was raised in the '50s," she explains. "I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you're not going to be loved."
